From fast food joints to old men in slippers, Rob Pepper’s new series of paintings and drawings create a cultural comparison of two countries.

As part of its ongoing commitment to producing innovative and varied exhibitions, SW1 Gallery brings the exhibition by this young international artist to Victoria from 9th - 29th May. ‘To There and Back Again’ will explore Pepper’s fascination with using drawings to capture the essence of communities and includes moments from a modern day grand tour of Middle America, as well as his subsequent return to Middle England.

Comprising around 50 pieces, the exhibition will bring together the most important images from each side of the Atlantic. It will be his largest display to date, showcasing his comparative observations, processes and thoughts

Pepper will be giving an artist’s talk on 20th May 6.30 - 8.30 and will also be running drawing workshops at SW1 Gallery from 7 - 9pm on 15th and 22nd May. For more information please contact gallery manager Heidi Hazue.

The Drawing Room - Memories Made Of Clay

Drawing RoomDrawing RoomDrawing RoomDrawing RoomDrawing RoomDrawing RoomDrawing RoomDrawing Room

Last night we held the third Drawing Room at St Lukes, West Holloway, London. It was a really lovely evening and attended by 25 people and as always I really enjoyed the process of the session.

We started with a 10 minute breathing practice led by Aimie, which led onto creating a modeled piece of clay based on an early memory. There were some really amazing stories attached to each piece, grown men wishing they could have played with doll’s houses, mythic French doors that led to freedom, a half eaten apple that represented a sad unhidden secret, memories of grandmother’s that had passed and roses made by someone who is happily still in the throws of childhood.

The second half of the session we used a heavy graphite ground and added to and took away with pencil and putty rubber. The images above are some of the images from the night.

If you’d like to attend one of the sessions that I’m running where drawing is a meditation then there are a few more sessions happening before summer:

This narrative painting was created a year ago and is in my private collection. It’s based on 7 drawings from the Daily Drawing Diary in 2006 and tells the tale of How Life Is.

The Fibonacci Series - A Collection Minimal Paintings

Over the past week I’ve been showing a series of my minimal paintings that I’ve created over the past few years. The preparations for “To There & Back Again - Catching The Spaces In Between” are in full swing so I thought that I’d use this time to revisit some of my other work.

These paintings are all based on body size and the connection it has to the Fibonacci Ratio.

These paintings were created as meditations on the space that exists in between the inhalation and exhalation.

This painting still takes my own breath away. It’s up there with the Cow as one of my favourite pieces of my own artwork. The painting is my life size minimal self portrait. The canvas is my own height and the width is the size of my arm span (which just so happens to be square). The gold represents my standing height and torso width, which just happens to be the golden mean of both my height and my arm span.

These paintings are intended to point out that we are all individuals and that our sizes and shapes are unique. However there are also naturally occurring ratios that relate to everyone and therefore there is a commonality between one and all.

I have made bespoke portraits for clients including a Princess Of Abu Dhabi. If you’d like to find out more about commissioning a piece and pricing then email me.
