The Crockett Hotel

The Alamo is a huge part of Texan history and of a Texan’s identity.

In short it was when a group of people were fighting for freedom for Texas from Mexico in February and March 1836. 200 men (including Davey Crockett) were held up in the Alamo and they were all killed or executed after fighting Santa Anna. The Mexicans won that battle but a couple of months later were defeated by Sam Houston at San Jacinto.

Coming here made me question the difference between freedom fighter and terrorist. Nelson Mandela was once known as a terrorist, Martin Mcguinness now deputy first minister of Northern Ireland was second in command with the IRA at the time of Bloody Sunday in 1972. Davey Crockett in this situation when Texas was a part of Mexico fighting for “freedom” would have been called a terrorist by Santa Anna in modern parlance.

But to many these men are now heroes.

So will the generations view the “War on Terror” in years to come?

In a different way to how we “Remember The Alamo?
